In June 2018, SFGC concluded its season with two historically-informed performances of Henry Purcell’s 1680 opera Dido and Aeneas in collaboration with Voices of Music and the San Francisco Early Music Society as part of the 2018 Berkeley Festival & Exhibition. Dido and Aeneas is the only English opera from before the late nineteenth century to make it into the mainstream operatic canon.

In the San Francisco Classical Voice’s 2017-2018 “Best of the Bay” awards, these performances took top honors in three categories with SFCV’s Michael Zwiebach writing: “To haveDido and Aeneas not just revived but revivified in a way that gets closer to the opera’s original sound was special and encapsulates what the early music performer is supposed to do —confront tradition in order to show us something new.”
