Auditions for girls between the ages of 7 and 15 for the San Francisco Girls Chorus School are held each June in San Francisco and Berkeley. For older applicants, some experience reading music is necessary. Chorus School rehearsals are held in San Francisco and/or the East Bay.

For younger applicants between the ages of 4-7, no previous music experience is required for participation in the Preparatory Chorus.

Upon gaining acceptance into the Chorus School, young singers have the unique opportunity to:

  • Become members of an organization dedicated to the advancement of girls and young women through excellence in music
  • Enjoy the company of over 230 choristers in bi-weekly rehearsals
  • Perform classical music, musical theater, and world music under the guidance of professional musicians
  • Study vocal technique and learn sight singing, study skills and music theory
  • Attend a 7-10 day summer music camp
  • Learn to perform with poise and confidence for Bay Area audiences

The ideal candidate for participation in the San Francisco Girls Chorus School is an energetic child possessing the following music attributes that are generally considered requisite for the highest standards of performance in choral music: the aptitude to listen and hear differences in pitch, the ability to match tones with the voice, the capability to imitate rhythms correctly, and an instinct for singing. Choristers must cooperate well with others; be able to take verbal and written instruction for improvement, and have the capacity to focus and concentrate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the developmental benefits of choral singing and music education?
Singing in chorus is a fun, social experience where life-long friendships are formed. But there are other benefits, as well. Singing in chorus helps build self-confidence, character, and important communication and collaboration skills. In addition, research has found that access to singing and music education for young children benefits language development, spatial-temporal skills, and can result in improved test scores.

When are auditions?
Auditions for the San Francisco Girls Chorus School are held each June in San Francisco, at the Kanbar Performing Arts Center, and in Berkeley, at the Crowden School.

How often do the Chorus School ensembles rehearse?
Twice weekly for Levels I, II, and III (Tuesdays and Thursdays in San Francisco, from 4-6 pm; Wednesdays and Fridays in Berkeley, from 4-6 pm). Twice weekly and one Saturday a month for Level IV. Dress rehearsals and performances may take place on weekends.

What are the requirements for acceptance to the Chorus School?
Auditions are open to girls ages 7 through 15. For younger singers, no previous music background is required. However, successful auditionees must be able to hear and match pitches, follow directions in the audition, be free of hoarseness and other vocal difficulties, and read simple sentences. Older auditionees should have some experience reading music.

What if I can't afford the tuition?
The Chorus School has a need-based scholarship program, for which we raise funds throughout the year. We encourage all who are interested to audition, regardless of financial circumstances. If your daughter has been accepted and you need financial assistance, you may apply for a scholarship.

I live in the East Bay. Can you tell me about the East Bay program?
We offer an East Bay program for Levels I, II, and III that meets on Wednesdays and Fridays at the Crowden Music Center, 1475 Rose Street, in Berkeley, from 4pm to 6pm. We offer the same curriculum as the San Francisco program with the same Level Directors.
