Auditions for girls ages of 7 and up for the San Francisco Girls Chorus School are held each May/June in San Francisco and Berkeley. For older applicants, some experience reading music is necessary. The Chorus School has two rehearsal locations to choose from: San Francisco and Berkeley. SFGC also offers a non-auditioned Preparatory Chorus for younger singers ages 4-7. No previous musical training is required to participate in the Preparatory Chorus.

For the 2018-19 year, Chorus School auditions will be held on the following days:

  • Thursday, May 31, 2018, from 3-6pm in San Francisco (Kanbar Performing Arts Center, 44 Page St)
  • Friday, June 1, 2018, from 3-6pm in North Berkeley (Crowden Music Center, 1475 Rose St)
  • Saturday, June 2, 2018, from 11am-4pm in San Francisco (Kanbar Performing Arts Center, 44 Page St)

If interested, please complete the Audition Information Form and we will contact you in the near future to schedule an audition and answer any questions you have about the Chorus School program or audition process.

The ideal candidate for participation in the San Francisco Girls Chorus School is an energetic child possessing the musical attributes that are generally considered requisite for the highest standards of performance in choral music: the aptitude to listen and hear differences in pitch, the ability to match tones with the voice, the capability to imitate rhythms correctly, and an instinct for singing. Choristers must cooperate well with others, possess basic reading skills, be able to take verbal and written instruction for improvement, and have the capacity to focus and concentrate.

 Upon gaining acceptance into the Chorus School, young singers have the unique opportunity to:

  • Become members of an organization dedicated to the empowerment and advancement of girls and young women through excellence in music education and performance;
  • Enjoy the company of nearly 300 choristers in bi-weekly rehearsals;
  • Perform classical music, contemporary music, world music, and some musical theater under the guidance of a faculty of elite performers/educators;
  • Study vocal technique and learn sight singing, study skills, and music theory;
  • Attend a 7-10 day summer music camp and train with our expert faculty of professional musicians;
  • Learn to perform with poise and confidence for Bay Area audiences!

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the developmental benefits of choral singing and music education?
Singing is the oldest musical art form, and is integral to the world’s cultures. Singing in chorus helps build self-confidence, character, and important communication and collaboration skills. In addition, research has found that access to singing and music education for young children benefits language development, spatial-temporal skills, and can result in improved test scores. Singing in chorus is a fun, challenging, social experience where lifelong relationships and character are formed.

When are auditions, and how should my daughter prepare for the audition?
Auditions for the San Francisco Girls Chorus School are held on May 31 and June 2 in San Francisco (Kanbar Performing Arts Center) and on June 1 in Berkeley (Crowden Music School). Auditionees are expected to come prepared to sing one song, which can include folk or musical theater songs.

How often do the Chorus School ensembles rehearse?
Twice weekly for Levels I, II, and III (Tuesdays & Thursdays in San Francisco from 4-6 pm OR Wednesdays & Fridays in Berkeley from 4-6 pm). Twice weekly for Level IV (Tuesdays & Fridays from 4:15-6:45pm in San Francisco; one Saturday a month from 9:30am-4pm). Dress rehearsals and performances may take place on weekends in either San Francisco or the East Bay.

I live in the East Bay. Can you tell me about the East Bay program?
We offer an East Bay program for Levels I, II, and III that meets on Wednesdays & Fridays at the Crowden Music Center (1475 Rose Street, North Berkeley) from 4-6pm. We offer the same curriculum as the San Francisco program with the same Level Directors.

What are the requirements for acceptance to the Chorus School?
Auditions are open to girls ages 7 and up. For younger singers, no previous music background is required. However, successful auditionees must be able to hear and match pitches, follow directions in the audition, be free of hoarseness and other vocal difficulties, and read simple sentences. Older auditionees should have some experience with music theory and reading music.

What if I can't afford the tuition?
The Chorus School has a need-based scholarship program, administered through the Elizabeth Avakian Scholarship Fund, for which we raise funds throughout the year. We encourage all who are interested in auditioning to do so, regardless of financial circumstances. If your daughter has been accepted and you feel she needs financial assistance, you may apply for a scholarship.
