April 09 | SAN FRANCISCO GIRLS CHORUS CLOSES 30TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON With Premieres and Guest Jazz Vocalist Paula West

San Francisco, April 24, 2009 – Wrapping up an extraordinary 30th anniversary season that featured its New York Lincoln Center debut and an appearance at the inauguration of President Barack Obama, the San Francisco Girls Chorus closes its 2008-2009 Bay Area home season with two performances of “Made in the Americas,” Artistic Director Susan McMane has announced. The concerts feature jazz vocalist Paula West and her trio in arrangements with the Girls Chorus and a set of her own. Also on the program are the West Coast premiere of Two Mountain Songs by Gabriela Lena Frank and the World premiere of the complete Just Imagine suite of Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim and Irving Berlin songs arranged by Bay Area composer Dwight Okamura, which features guest cellist Emil Miland. The concerts will be conducted by Susan McMane with accompanist Susan Soehner.

San Francisco, February 2, 2009 – The three-time Grammy Award-winning San Francisco Girls Chorus will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a concert and black-tie gala Friday, March 6, at Herbst Theatre. Entitled “Baroque Splendor,” the benefit evening honors San Francisco Girls Chorus Founding Artistic Director Elizabeth Appling Bloch and features guest artists Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. In addition to the concert, conducted by Artistic Director Susan McMane, the event will feature cocktails, dinner, and live auctions. Proceeds will support the San Francisco Girls Chorus scholarship fund. The 2009 Gala is chaired by Steven Currier and Kay Bishop.

San Francisco, CA, January 9, 2009 – San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom will send off two of the City’s finest youth and arts organizations as San Francisco’s contribution to the inauguration of US President-Elect Barack Obama with a special free public concert Thursday, January 15, at 4:30 p.m. in San Francisco City Hall’s Rotunda. The combined San Francisco Boys Chorus and San Francisco Girls Chorus will share the stage in Washington, DC, with Aretha Franklin, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman and others for the January 20 Presidential Inauguration. The Mayor’s send-off concert on January 15 will feature the patriotic repertoire the combined Choruses will sing in Washington. The half-hour send-off concert is free of charge and open to the public.

San Francisco, CA, December 9, 2008 – Two of the nation’s top choral music groups—the San Francisco Boys Chorus, Ian Robertson, Artistic Director; and the San Francisco Girls Chorus, Susan McMane, Artistic Director—have been invited by Senator Dianne Feinstein and the joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies for President Barack Obama to perform as part of the swearing in ceremonies scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, 2009, in Washington, DC. A combined chorus of 86 (43 members of the San Francisco Boys Chorus and 43 of the San Francisco Girls Chorus) will travel to Washington to perform.

San Francisco, November 5, 2008 – The world premiere of a new commissioned work by composer Eleanor Daley highlights a holiday program of festive voices, organ, strings, bells and harp when the internationally acclaimed three-time Grammy Award-winning San Francisco Girls Chorus takes the Davies Symphony Hall stage Tuesday, December 23, at 7:30 p.m. Featured will be the 43-voice San Francisco Girls Chorus complemented by 250 voices of the San Francisco Girls Chorus School and alumnae plus an audience sing-along and guest artists Jonathan Dimmock, organ, and the Sonos Handbell Ensemble, all led by Girls Chorus Artistic Director Susan McMane.

San Francisco, September 17 2008 – The San Francisco Girls Chorus opens its 2008-2009 30th Anniversary season with two concerts of “Dreams and Visions”, featuring two centuries of music including the world premiere of settings of e. e. cummings’ poetry by American composer Augusta Read Thomas and guest organist David Higgs. Two performances of “Dreams and Visions” will be given, Friday, October 24, at 8 p.m. at Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco, and Sunday, October 26, at 3 p.m. at First Congregational Church in Berkeley conducted by Artistic Director Susan McMane.

San Francisco Girls Chorus’ 29th Season!

Our concert season begins with "Music Fit for a Queen", a program of great choral repertoire from the British Isles. Our Annual Sing-Along at Davies Hall marks the 25th anniversary of this Holiday tradition. Celebrate with us as 300 choristers sing carols of the season accompanied by brass and organ.
