The Chorus School and rehearsals have started up again for the 2009-2010 season. This week we will have successive “Back to Chorus” nights for all our families on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

 

Summer Magic

Summer has always been a magical season for me. As a child it meant a long break from school, and was usually kicked off by a pre-dawn car load-out for family road trips. I’d fall asleep stretched out in the backseat (before legal car-seat and seat belt days, for sure!) and wake up, as if by magic, in brilliant sunshine somewhere new.

Slow Food

I’ve just finished reading the book Heat by Bill Buford. Among many adventures Buford describes his stint as an apprentice in the kitchen of superstar chef Mario Batali, and his visits to Italy to learn about the roots of the food he helps prepare. I’m a pretty serious home cook, as is my husband, (who is also a pretty serious organic gardener), so we love each and every anecdote in Heat. I’ve long felt that the Slow Food folks need to officially connect with concert presenters and art museums.

Six Degrees of Separation

“Think globally, act locally” is a sound guideline for living, and I was recently reminded of just how interconnected we all are. Our neighbor Giorgio came to dinner last weekend. He is part of an interesting microcosm on our block that includes a Greek flute maker, an early music cellist/gamba player, a ship builder, and Giorgio, a carpenter from Italy who restores amazing antiques for private collections and museums.

Comfort and Loss

I lost two dear friends last month. They were friends from another chapter in my life, when I lived and worked in New York more than a decade ago. They were boon companions to so many adventures, and I truly loved them. Both died of cancer in the lungs, and spent their final days in the same hospice in the Bronx. I only learned of their terminal diagnoses within a few of weeks of their deaths. It is still unbelievable to
