A Momentous Debut

Headline:

I’m pleased to announce the debut of an end product, or artifact, of all that musical development and education.  This Sunday, Nov. 15 we will host a party to celebrate the release of SFGC’s latest recording.

A debut is a very special thing.  Since our tour to New York last April, we’ve been talking a lot about SFGC’s thrilling debut concert in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. The quaint (or perhaps not) anachronism of a young woman’s debut into “society” is still practiced in some quarters in this country as well.  Supposedly, a white satin gown and a fancy ball mark the girl’s entry into her social milieu.

On the Road Again

Headline:

It is our mission to give concerts around the world, including places like Latvia, Nebraska, or even the other end of our own state

On Sunday the girls sang at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in Southern California. As expected, they gave a beautiful performance, and a wonderful review of this concert was published yesterday here. The Cerritos Center is a big performing arts center in SoCal. The auditorium seats about 1500, and I think Susan would agree, it’s an acoustically challenging space to perform in! But, as always, the girls excelled.

The Everyday Work of Art

In watching the new Ken Burns series on PBS about the National Parks the other night, I was struck by a quote from John Muir, who said we “need beauty as much as we need bread.”
